After first joining Crain’s Detroit Business as an intern in 2007, Kim Winkler started a full-time position at the publication after graduating from college. She’s been at Crain ever since working for various publications; even when one of the brands Kim was working at closed, she was able to transfer to another job within Crain.
One of the many reasons Kim has stayed at Crain is because of the support and multiple growth opportunities. “At Crain, my direct supervisors have always been very supportive of my growth,” Kim said, even when it meant allowing her to transfer to another brand. “I’ve seen that across the board here at Crain; it takes a strong leader to allow their strongest assets to move to another opportunity for their own personal growth.”
The high value that Crain places on each employee is another draw for Kim. “Even when I was just a young intern, my voice was heard at the table. You don’t need to be on the top rungs of the ladder to be heard around here.”
When Mark was hired by Crain in 2005 as the first Washington correspondent for former publication Workforce Management, it was his first time working as a journalist. “It was exciting to enter the journalism field by creating a new role for the magazine,” Mark said.
Mark has been at Crain ever since; even when Workforce Management eliminated his position in 2010, he was hired by another Crain publication, InvestmentNews, six weeks later. “Crain did not abandon me,” Mark said. “It’s been my only journalistic home – and that’s part of the reason I value working here.”
Another reason Mark enjoys being at Crain is its journalistic quality and superb management. “My InvestmentNews editors have given me the latitude to develop the beat in a way that has allowed me to grow as a reporter and become an expert on an issue – fiduciary duty – that is central to our readers.”
Valerie met the editor of Modern Healthcare at a health care journalists’ forum while she was getting her master’s degree — she forwarded him a resume after she graduated when an internship role opened up in the editorial department. She has been working at Crain since January 2017, but said it already feels like home.
From the beginning, Valerie found that her internship was completely hands-on and intensive. “I get to write, edit and participate in the production process, as well as assist in research tasks. The longer I work here, the more I learn and the more I am given to do.” She also said she appreciates the competitive pay, which allows her to fully invest in the experience without worrying about money.
“I have learned so much about magazine production and health care in the last few months and in an environment where I always feel supported and encouraged,” Valerie said. “I work very closely with the editors, and it has helped me to understand some of the bigger-level decisions made in the production of the magazine that reporters are often removed from.” For Valerie, her internship is the perfect entry into the world of serious print journalism.

As the creator of this plan, Simone was ultimately promoted to a director role overseeing both prepress and production for Crain’s NYC office.
